Potential Candidate

You have landed an interview for a seemingly great position.  Now what happens?  Successful interviewing skills are essential in order for you to lock in that offer.  Here are some interview helpers that will give you a competitive edge.  Remember, if you are on time you are late, so give yourself plenty of time to get there.  About 15 minutes early.  Also, do your best to answer every question directly, supported by an example from your work experience.  Start thinking about all the wonderful things you've done in your career, and what your most significant accomplishments have been - it is NOW time to brag!

Gathering essential background information on future employers is an imperative element in outstanding interview preparation.  Step one should always include extensive research on the companies you are interviewing at.  Being prepared to answer questions not just about you but also about the company will earn you some major brownie points.  Knowing about the companies past accomplishments and future plans can make your interview a lot more interactive and could give you just what you need to win in this competitive job market.

One of the best ways to prepare is to think of examples where you have successfully utilized the skills you have acquired.  That brings us to step two, nowadays we are seeing behavior based interviews, where the employer predicts your future performance based on your past experience.  Being prepared and providing detailed responses that include specific examples of your work experience will be used rather than the traditional questions based on background and experience.

Staying calm during an interview is also an important tip for the interviewing process, asking for clarification when something is not clear would be the third step.  Taking a moment, or two, or even three to frame the questions asked is perfectly acceptable to be able to fully answer the question.
